Referees along with coaches are an important part of the community of people needed for youth soccer in Loveland. LYSA is always in need of new referees; please consider becoming a Referee!

All LYSA Referees are required to have a SAY Referee License. LYSA holds a referee class each season to teach the soccer rules that our referees need to know. The class includes both in-class and on-field instruction. Attendees are required to successfully pass a test at the end of the class to demonstrate proficiency in the rules of soccer.

Many current and former players become referees or referee while they are still playing soccer. Below are some Questions and Answers about being an LYSA Referee.

What do you have to do to be a referee for LYSA?

Take the Referee Class that is offered at the beginning of each season. In the Spring it is in March and in the Fall it is August. Exact dates, times and locations will be announced ahead of time.

How old do you have to be to referee for LYSA?

Be 13 years old or turn 13 during the season.

Where is the class held?

Typically at Sanctuary Church on S. Lebanon Rd in Loveland on a Saturday. Classes normally run from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Do I need to register for the class?

Yes.

LYSA will provide a link to register at the time the class details are announced.

Is there a test at the end of the class?

Yes.

You must get a 70% on it to become a referee.

Can I referee and play soccer at the same time?

Yes

LYSA will work around your team's soccer schedule.

How many referees are used in a game?

Passers has only 1 referee.

All other ages have 2 referees. Both are on the field. LYSA does not use Assistant Referees (AR) as is done in select or professional soccer.

Can I referee with my friends?

Yes, you will work with the Referee Coordinator on scheduling.

What age can I referee?

Referees must be at least two years older than the division they referee.

Does LYSA need adult referees?

Yes!!

LYSA is always in need of adults who can referee older ages.

Is there a referee uniform?

Yes

You will need to have a referee shirt, solid color black shorts, referee socks, loud referee whistle, yellow/red cards and have a stop watch to time the games.

How many games can I referee on a Saturday?

You will work with the LYSA Referee Coordinator on your schedule. You will generally have the ability to referee two back-to-back games on Saturdays.

I am certified as a Select Soccer Referee through US Soccer, do I have to take the LYSA class?

Yes

LYSA Referees are licensed through SAY Soccer and there are some different rules for recreational soccer than select soccer.

What do LYSA Referees get paid?

See the table below for the pay. Referees are paid in cash by the home team coach.
